Moving Off Wix to a Real Website — What to Expect

Wix is the most-popular “starter” site builder in the small-business segment, and the most common reason we get migration calls. The pattern is consistent: a business builds on Wix, grows for a couple of years, hits a wall, and realizes the platform that was supposed to be flexible isn’t.

Here’s what to expect when you move.

Why people leave Wix

• SEO is constrained. Wix’s SEO has gotten better, but it’s still painful. URL structure, schema, page-speed — you fight the platform on each one.
• Page-speed scores are low. Mobile Lighthouse scores in the 30s and 40s are common. Google penalizes that in rankings.
• You can’t take the site with you. Wix’s site format is proprietary. There’s no “export to HTML” button. If you leave, you’re manually rebuilding.
• The pricing creeps. $14, $24, $39, $49 per month, plus apps from the App Market. The all-in monthly bill is often $60+ for a small business.
• Custom logic is impossible or hacky. Anything beyond “contact form sends an email” pushes you into Velo (their JavaScript layer), which has its own gotchas.

The migration realities

Your content has to be rebuilt manually

Wix doesn’t export. Your designer or web shop will copy your text, save your images, and rebuild the structure on whatever platform they’re moving you to. This is annoying but it’s actually a feature: it forces a content audit and you usually end up with sharper copy than what was on the old site.

Your URLs will probably change

Wix uses a quirky URL structure. The new site will use cleaner URLs (e.g., /services/plumbing instead of /services-plumbing-1). When that happens, your web team needs to set up 301 redirects so search rankings transfer.

If the migration is done well, you won’t lose rankings. If 301s get skipped, you can lose 30-60% of organic traffic for 2-3 months.

Your domain stays put (probably)

Most Wix users registered the domain through Wix or pointed an external domain at Wix. Either way, you keep the domain. The question is just where it points:

• If the domain is registered with Wix, you’ll either transfer it out (cleaner) or update DNS records to point at the new host while keeping registration at Wix.
• If the domain is registered elsewhere (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare), you just update the DNS records there.

Your email might be a separate question

If you have email through Wix (e.g., Google Workspace via Wix), that’s a separate product. It can stay; or you can move it. Don’t conflate the two.

What changes after the migration

Page speed jumps dramatically

Wix sites typically score 30-50 on mobile Lighthouse. A modern statically-built site (what we deliver) typically scores 90+. That’s a real ranking signal — you tend to see organic traffic gains 30-90 days after the migration.

You own everything

Your source code, your domain, your hosting. We hand over the codebase. You can take it elsewhere if we ever stop being a fit.

The ongoing cost picture changes

Wix bundles hosting + builder + email + apps into a monthly fee. Once you leave, you’re paying for hosting separately ($5-$20/mo for static, more for dynamic), email separately, and potentially nothing for the site itself once it’s built.

Net: most clients save $20-$50/month on the recurring side after a Wix migration.

The order of operations

1. Audit current Wix site — what content, what URLs, what’s ranking
2. Build the new site (don’t cancel Wix yet)
3. Set up 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones
4. Cut DNS over to the new site
5. Verify in Google Search Console that the new pages are indexing
6. Cancel the Wix subscription — not before the cutover, after
